概要 Descriptions |
Based on comments from 2017 and before, I have revamped (changed) the class from what it to reduce the amount of homework time. It seemed to work well in 2018/19 so we will do similar things (Literature circles…. See below) but I have changed the book . We will be using a book (or handouts) with a short reading and some short exercises each week. You will practice English speaking to improve your conversational ability and to have fun with English. You will be divided into groups of 4 and each person will have a role in the class discussion each week (the role will change each week) You will learn how to discuss the topic of the day by being prepared for one of these 4 roles: DISCUSSION LEADER (controls group dynamics and will ask detailed questions to rest of the group) SUMMARIZER/PARAPHRASER (gives narrative information to the group.... i.e., summarizes the reading and tells the story to the others in the group DETAIL MASTER (do research to find additional photos/info on the Web to share with the group with an emphasis on information that has changed since the book was written) VOCABULARY MASTER (presents information about potentially unknown words from the reading to the group) Each of you will be assigned a role before class but you have to be prepared to change roles in case someone is absent. You will do the group discussion (all 4 roles) with your original group then the groups will be shuffled and you will do your role again for additional practice……. If there is time, we will shuffle groups again and you will do your role again in a new group. Roles will be switched each week. You will know your role for the next week before you leave class. If you are absent from class, when you return the next week… do the next scheduled topic and next role (role number increases by +1 each week, up to roll 4 then recycles to 1). |

目的 Objectives |
This class focuses on developing the communicative abilities of students in keeping with the imperatives of globalization, (cross-cultural, cross-linguistic, understanding of ethnic and other international issues), based on the principles of the Liberal Arts program at the Tokyo University of Science. |
到達目標 Outcomes |
The goal of this class are: 1. Students will be able to become comfortable with speaking in English and to increase their fluency by participating in group discussion and Q/A exchanges. 2. Students will be able to do simple research in order to prepare for their changing role in class each week. 3. Students will be able to become comfortable asking and answering questions in their group and will learn to volunteer to answer questions in the teacher-led section of the class Hopefully we will have some fun and you will learn a little about the science topics in the book too. . |
履修上の注意 Course notes prerequisites |
We will follow the book and check the exercises in class. You will read the 1.5-page essay and do the exercises in the chapter BEFORE you come to class. You will prepare for your assigned role for the day’s class. However, I will try to keep the homework to the minimum required for you to perform well in class. I MAY/MAY NOT assign additional exercises on some chapters which are to be completed before class. |

準備学習・復習 Preparation and review |
Instructions will be given about how to prepare the 4 roles for the class on the second day of class during the flipped class (week 2 in Spring/ week 1 in Fall). We will do the 22 topics from "Our Place in the Universe " over the course of the year plus some additional content given as handouts to the class. There will be a short reading, and some simple exercises to do at home. You will prepare the sheet(s) necessary for your assigned role……. either, Discussion Leader, Summarizer, Detail Master or Vocabulary master My goal is to keep the homework to a minimum, but you are expected to do the assigned preparation (i.e., homework) before class each week. The extra credit work (mentioned in the grading section, below) is just that... extra credit. It is not assigned but you will earn extra credit, if you decide to do it. In this course, there will be extensive speaking practice (mostly) in groups and many opportunities for listening as you ask and answer questions. Depending on your role for the week, you will be expected to be able to confidently participate in short conversations on the week’s topics. |

成績評価方法 Performance grading policy |
Because the Spring 2020 syllabus was written before we had to go on-line with Zoom classes, the scoring was slightly changed in the spring to reflect how we actually did the classes in the spring. You were evaluated according to the metric listed below... My grade was worth 100% in the spring. My grade was worth 100% in the fall. Please plan accordingly. SCORING FOR YOUR GRADE for the fall semester of 2020 (Zoom – online classes) ~40% +/- Class participation (CP) ~10% +/- Actively paying attention when the questions are being answered and actively participating in daily discussions when you do your role as part of the group discussions in the class breakout sessions….. Hint, DO NOT use your home’s Wi-Fi…… plug in direct using a class 5e (minimum), 6 or 7 LAN cable (higher is better). ~10% +/- Peer evaluations – keeping track of and commenting about what others do in your group’s breakout room discussions……. ~20% +/- Credit for volunteering to answer questions in class….. (I ONLY call on people who volunteer…… ~60% +/- Work done as part of Literature Circles group discussions, to include: ~30% +/- PRE-CLASS WORK ~10% +/- Credit for answering the Qs from Our Unique Planet that we will go over in class……. (This is your answer sheet (AS) that you turn in as #1 in Edmodo, before class)….. ~10% +/- Credit for properly doing your CORRECT role for the day……. See below too (This is your role sheet (RS) that you turn in as #2 in Edmodo, before class)…… ~10% +/- Credit for the QUALITY of your role sheet (i.e., your homework adequately meets the requirements for the CORRECT role... more (than the required minimum) is better and yields Extra Credit, but the minimums are below. role 1 – at least 5 Qs, with answers and references role 2 – at least 15 sentences distributed over all of the paragraphs in the text, role 3 – at least 5 photos in a properly prepared PPT file with enough words to discuss EACH photos for 15-30 seconds, plus references role 4 – at least 15 vocabulary words from the text with a proper English definition for how the word is used in the text and proper reference for the English-English dictionary where you got the definition (word from the Background Info, vocabulary and translated glossary may not be used) ~30% +/- POST-CLASS WORK ~10% +/- Credit for checking your answers as we go over them at the beginning of each class……. You will download this corrected AS file to Edmodo location 3 after class…… before midnight the day after class). ~10% +/- Credit for improving your role sheet based on comments made in the class. You will download that file to Edmodo location 4 after class…… before midnight the day after class). ~10% +/- Credit for answering the questionnaire (You will download that file to Edmodo location 5 after class…… before midnight the day after class. Up to ~10% +/- Extra credit for doing the ExCr version of the other 3 roles on page 3 of your primary role sheet…. Or if other ExCredit work is assigned/allowed. Remember, you should check your answers in class and volunteer to answer in class in order to earn points… I hope that this explanation makes the scoring requirements clearer. ASK, if you don’t understand. Up to ~10-30% +/- Other (quizzes about content or other, as needed) – probably won’t be used if you come to class prepared. However, if I suspect that people have not prepared for the class, a pop quiz will be given.... (This will be discussed on day 1.) If the total does go over 100%, it will be normalized back to 100% Anything added or removed from the grading will be fully explained in class. You are expected to be present and prepared for each class period. For this, you will receive CP points for that day’s class. There are ways to lose your CP points which will be explained on the first day of class |

教科書 Textbooks/Readings |
(予定) Title: Our Place in the Universe Authors: Ian Bowring and others Publisher: Seibido ISBN:978-4-7919-1015-1 You should buy the book BEFORE the first class and bring it to class EVERY week unless we are using a handout for that week’s class. In which case bringing the handout is REQUIRED. You will lose class participation points if you do not have your book or a printout of the handout. ALSO…… It is also suggested that you have access to a good English – English dictionary.... (E/E). Using J/E or E/J dictionaries in class is not allowed..... paper, electronic or keitai. Electronic dictionary use in class is fine but keitai usage in class is allowed ONLY for looking up a word in an E/E dictionary, and then ONLY with the instructor’s permission PRIOR permission. Any other usage of your keitai in class is prohibited, unless you ask for the instructor’s PRIOR permission. This will be discussed during class 1/2 |

備考 Remarks |
If you wish to learn as much as possible you must do your best to only use English in class. If you speak Japanese, soon everyone will speak Japanese. If you speak English, soon everyone will be speaking English. We are all responsible for learning English. Instructions will be given about how to prepare the 4 roles for the class on the first and second days of class. You are to do the work yourself……. So……. DO NOT copy from other students doing the same role. DO NOT copy the answers for the exercises in the book from other students either. This is an automation zero (0) for the day’s scoring. All homework is to be TYPED and is assigned, meaning it is due at the START OF CLASS. You SHOULD correct your answers when we go over them in class, but not fill in blanks. You need to do your homework before class. Since there will be many people in the class, I will mostly ask for volunteers instead of calling on people to answer questions about things that you were to do in the book. There are points awarded for volunteering. You will be expected to come to class prepared. Absences: You are expected to be present and prepared for all classes. If you’re not here, you can’t learn…… plus you won’t earn points for class participation. If you are absent from class, when you return the next week… do the next topic and next role (role number increases by +1 each week, up to roll 4 then recycles to 1). Bring your homework for the week you were absent, if you want at least partial credit. If you were absent because of an illness or for some other reason allowed by TDU (death in the family, etc.), bring an OFFICIAL excuse from the school office (with their hanko) on the week that you return to class. If you turn in your homework without an official excuse, you get half credit. If you turn in nothing on the week that you return to class, no credit for that assignment, even if you turn it in later. Class LINE group We will use a class LINE group to communicate between classes Class Email Since I may need to send you files, I will communicate with students by a Yahoo email. You are expected to give me at least one working email address (used only for class) and to read it before class. Only English should be used in class discussions and Q/A |
