4/29/2020 edit to my syllabus Because of the COVID-19 pandemic classes have been delayed and are being restarted in May as some combination of Synchronous and Asynchronous remote (online) classes: 5月からこのクラスは遠隔授業になります。この遠隔授業は同期の授業です。大切な情報がありますので、下記をよく読んでください。 (It says: From May this class will be a remote class. This remote class will be synchronous. There is important information below, so please read carefully.) Our first class is scheduled for 5/1 but, the registration for the class does not open until 4/30 so I may not be able to make contact with you before the class starts. If we were actually meeting, this would not be a problem. However, this semester, I won’t know who is in our classes until you register and show up on the class role (the day after you actually register). Therefore register as soon as possible (ASAP) please….. 4/30, if possible. The 5/1 class will be (mostly) asynchronous. I will post some files on LETUS. Original syllabus follows: Based on comments from 2017 and before, I have revamped (changed) the class from what it to reduce the amount of homework time. It seemed to work well in 2018/19 so we will do similar things (Literature circles…. See below) but I have changed the book . We will be using a book (or handouts) with a short reading and some short exercises each week. You will practice English speaking to improve your conversational ability and to have fun with English. You will be divided into groups of 4 and each person will have a role in the class discussion each week (the role will change each week) You will learn how to discuss the topic of the day by being prepared for one of these 4 roles: DISCUSSION LEADER (controls group dynamics and will ask detailed questions to rest of the group) SUMMARIZER/PARAPHRASER (gives narrative information to the group.... i.e., summarizes the reading and tells the story to the others in the group DETAIL MASTER (do research to find additional photos/info on the Web to share with the group with an emphasis on information that has changed since the book was written) VOCABULARY MASTER (presents information about potentially unknown words from the reading to the group) Each of you will be assigned a role before class but you have to be prepared to change roles in case someone is absent. You will do the group discussion (all 4 roles) with your original group then the groups will be shuffled and you will do your role again for additional practice……. If there is time, we will shuffle groups again and you will do your role again in a new group. Roles will be switched each week. You will know your role for the next week before you leave class. If you are absent from class, when you return the next week… do the next scheduled topic and next role (role number increases by +1 each week, up to roll 4 then recycles to 1). |

Students will be able to do simple research in order to prepare for their changing role in class each week. 3. Students will be able to become comfortable asking and answering questions in their group and will learn to volunteer to answer questions in the teacher-led section of the class Hopefully we will have some fun and you will learn a little about the science topics in the book too. . |

You will prepare for your assigned role for the day’s class. However, I will try to keep the homework to the minimum required for you to perform well in class. Yoroshiku…… Original syllabus follows: Instructions will be given about how to prepare the 4 roles for the class on the second day of class during the flipped class (week 2 in Spring/ week 1 in Fall). We will do the 22 topics from "Our Place in the Universe " over the course of the year plus some additional content given as handouts to the class. There will be a short reading, and some simple exercises to do at home. You will prepare the sheet(s) necessary for your assigned role……. either, Discussion Leader, Summarizer, Detail Master or Vocabulary master My goal is to keep the homework to a minimum, but you are expected to do the assigned preparation (i.e., homework) before class each week. The extra credit work (mentioned in the grading section, below) is just that... extra credit. It is not assigned but you will earn extra credit, if you decide to do it. In this course, there will be extensive speaking practice (mostly) in groups and many opportunities for listening as you ask and answer questions. Depending on your role for the week, you will be expected to be able to confidently participate in short conversations on the week’s topics. |

They will be announced in class (on Zoom). Original syllabus follows: Grades will be calculated as follows (will be discussed on day 1): ~30% +/- Class participation (CP) ~20% +/- Actively paying attention and participating in daily discussions when you do your role as part of the group discussions in class .... (This will be discussed on day 1.) ~10% +/- Peer evaluations – commenting what others do in your group discussions.... (This will be discussed on day 1.) Up to ~10% +/- Extra credit for volunteering to answer questions in class.... (This will be discussed on day 1.) Up to ~10% +/- Extra credit for checking your answers as we go over them in class.... (This will be discussed on day 1.) ~70% +/- Work done as part of Literature Circles groups, to include: ~40% +/- Exercises from Our Place in the Universe – we will go over the exercises in class. You should check your answers and volunteer to answer in order to earn ExCr points… See above... (This will be discussed on day 1.) ~30% +/- Homework – Preparing adequately for the CORRECT role.... 4/29/2020 edit to my syllabus Please buy the book…… Our Place in the Universe by Ian Bowring (and others) published by Seibido (ISBN-14 978-4-7919-1015-1) through the Kinokuniya link (YourKITS) on the CENTIS portal. Since I do not know when the book will be sent by Kinokuniya, the first chapter is available at https://www.seibido.co.jp/data/sample1/9784791910151.pdf. I will send PDF copies of chapters 2 and 3 to you once you show up on the class list. Original syllabus follows: (予定) Title: Our Place in the Universe Authors: Ian Bowring and others Publisher: Seibido ISBN:978-4-7919-1015-1 You should buy the book BEFORE the first class and bring it to class EVERY week unless we are using a handout for that week’s class. In which case bringing the handout is REQUIRED. You will lose class participation points if you do not have your book or a printout of the handout. ALSO…… It is also suggested that you have access to a good English – English dictionary.... (E/E). Using J/E or E/J dictionaries in class is not allowed..... paper, electronic or keitai. Electronic dictionary use in class is fine but keitai usage in class is allowed ONLY for looking up a word in an E/E dictionary, and then ONLY with the instructor’s permission PRIOR permission. 4/29/2020 edit to my syllabus ABSENCES: On 5/8 and every Friday after, we will have our class (at least partially) on Zoom. I will send you the Zoom link using the class LINE group. Try to join the Zoom waiting room at least 5’ before the scheduled start time for the class. I will admit you to the class at the start time. Try to practice with Zoom before 5/8 so that you can sign into the class Zoom waiting room and be admitted on time. You should have your video on and your name and TUS ID number entered in English so that I can see you and know who you are. This will be the first way that I take attendance for this online class. After 5/15, if you are not signed into the waiting room at the start of class, you will be considered late. We will do the first ~30’ as a full class (going over homework from the book). After that you will be assigned to breakout groups and go some group work. I will check in on each group (hopefully, at least 2x) and just observe. I will probably not talk but you can ask questions if you need to. This will be the 2nd way that I take attendance for this online class. We will then come back to the main class meeting room and I will discuss the next week. This will be the third way that I take attendance for this online class. ONLINE BEHAVIOR To maintain a good environment in our Zoom classroom, I will tell you now that the class session will be recorded of your protection. I shouldn’t have to say this but: 1. Do not share the Zoom link with anyone who is not in our class. 2. Do not display sexy, amorous, erotic, sensual, voluptuous material.
